    Help with a Gift-in-kind definition

We recently received a donation of 22K worth of wine from a donor(and Trustee, which compunds the issue) that owns a retail wince establishment.  Because he is not located in our area, he also paid to have two of our staff members drive a U-Haul to pick it up from his store.  The wine is to be used as gifts to staff (New staff party and holiday party) and for events that the college does. We have received gifts from him in the past like this, but because of a turnover in our ofice, we really do not have the 'real history' of this, just what it says in RE.  We are trying to do things right...please help me get this done correctly!!  I think that in the future an exchange of checks may be the best way to take care of it, but that won't work for this gift right now...we are too deep into it.

    Thanks

I would record this as a gift in kind.

If it is the business donating the wine I would double check tax laws.  In Ohio, they business would still have to pay sales tax on the wine, even if they are donating it to a charity.  That being said, I would book the gift as a Gift-in-kind also, sending a thank you listing how many bottles of wine but no value.

    Hi,

I also use gift in kind as type and I also pull in sub-type of No Payment - GIK (I built into the table) - use the reference field to say what it was.

This way I can haul these colums into the gift tab to see at a glanceSmile
