    Deleting Departments

    Hi -

Does anyone know if I can safely delete uneccessary course departments if I either reassign courses from these departments to another department OR delete them or mark them No Longer Used?

    Kimberly,

If you have tried deleting the departments from the department table in configuration, you have likely encountered the error "Department cannot be deleted because one ore more records are associated with it". This error would occur if the department is in use in one of the following two areas:

    1. Course records; Course tab
As you mentioned above, you could assign the courses to another department. (Deleting them will likely not be an option because information is linked to the course record. ie. schedules, grades, enrollment etc).
Also, making the course 'no longer used' will not bring you any closer to deleting the department. Even if the course is not in use, it will still hold onto the department designation which would prevent us from deleting.

    2. Faculty records: Bio2 tab
Faculty are restricted by department as well. You would need to either change or delete the faculty department that is listed on the bio2 tab of the faculty records

It can sometimes be challenging to find all of the records associated with a table entry. If you are still getting the message that it cannot be deleted, just inactivate the department. By making the department inactive, it can no longer be selected on any records and the department list from the front end will appear much cleaner.

    I hope this helps

    Jud
