    Sql 2000 to Sql 2005 Upgrade - Raiser's Edge 7

Hi, at the moment we are looking to upgrade our Sql 2000 to Sql 2005. We are looking at 2 options for the upgrade. The first is to detach the database via the BMC, then install a new copy of sql 2005 and the re-attach the database.

The other is to detach the database via the BMC and then upgrade the sql 2000 to sql 2005 then re-attach the database.

These are basically the methods suggested by Blackbaud for upgrading sql 2000 to sql 2008 but we are using sql 2005 at the moment.

Are these the way Blackbaud would suggest to upgrade sql 2000 to sql 2005. If so, which way would you recommend?

Hi, I am not the RE user but I am having an extensive knowledge of SQL Server so I am replying this query.

According to my experience, SQL Server 2000 and 2005 both can reside on the same server so it will be batter if you go for the first option, here you just need to take a backup of the database from sql server 2000 and restore it in sql server 2005, and just change the connection properties to connect to sql server 2005, here if you are not successful than you can continue your work with 2000 also by just changing connection properties. So at one end you are safe once you are done with 2005 you can continue with it.

We have done such things with our application lot many number of times.

Hope this will helpful to you. All the best.

    Hi Shan,

Either option will work to upgrade your database to SQL Server 2005.  The decision you make comes down to the needs of your organization.   As Vanaspati mentions, if you install a new instance of SQL 2005 you can always revert to SQL 2000 if anything comes up.  On the other hand, if you have a lot of databases to update and you have multiple SQL Server jobs and maintenance plans that you would have to setup again then an upgrade of the SQL Server instance may be the best method.

If you only have one database to update then your best option may be to install a new instance of SQL Server 2005.  Then detach your database from SQL Server 2000 and reattach to SQL Server 2005.
