At our institution we use the average stock value price to determine the value of the stock gift.  In the letter we thank them for the number of shares of the specific stock they donated and list the high; low and average value of the stock based on the date of the transfer.  This provices them all the information they need to use the amount of their choice for tax purposes.   Our receipt states that they didn't receive any goods or services as well.
