Limiting Summary for Gifts with a date range

I'm trying to query on last gift date GTE 1/1/07 and last gift amount GTE $2,000.00 OR total amount of gifts GTE 1/1/07 GTE $2,000.00.  I set up a constituent query, and wrote it as last gift date GTE 1/1/07 and GTE $2,000.00 OR a summary for gift amount as Gift Total Amount_1 GTE $2,000.00 with the field criteria filtered with gift date GTE 1/1/07.

It's pulling gifts that meet the first part of the criteria fine, but on the total amount part it's pulling donors who have given a total of $2,000.00 or more in their entire giving history.  Therefore, it's giving me more than what I'm actually trying to pull.  I don't understand why the gift summary is pulling donors regardless of gift date when I've included a gift date as part of the criteria!

QUERY IS NOT A REPORTING TOOL!

    It's pulling gifts

No!  It's pulling CONSTITUENTS and displaying their entire giving history. Query is a grouping tool, not a reporting tool.  If you want to limit the gifts displayed, use export with your query.

Also note that the first part of your query is superfluous in that if any single gift meets the criteria specified, then the total will necessarily meet the criteria specified, because the total will include at least that single gift.

Okay, I understand the superfluous part, so I've eliminated that entire first part of my query.  But whether I run the query and do an export, or if I create a new constituent export using the same query, I get the exact same number of constituents.  I am trying to group constituents, but I'm trying to group them according to their giving history since 1/1/07, not according to their entire giving history.  I don't know if this makes any difference or not, but my intent is not to create any reports, I am only trying to create an export as an Excel file.

I wouldn't expect the number of constituents to change.  I think that you saw gift dates outside of the range you specified and assumed that they were pulled because of the criteria, when what was actually happening was that the constituent met the criteria, because of a smaller sample of gifts, but the output contained ALL gifts.  I think that if you go back and check, you'll find that each of the constituents meets the criteria that you specified.
