    Confused [*-)] Relationship/Reciprocal Confusion

Evidently, Blackbaud does not make any reccomendations on the usage of Relationship/Reciprocals so they referred me here! Can someone please share with me their best practices for the useage of these two fields. It can be extremely confusing when you are trying to add an organization record to an individual record and vice versa.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

    Re: Relationship/Reciprocal Confusion

Per RE Essentials training a few years ago:

Relationship - What is this person to the constituent?

It starts to make sense after a bit...If constituent is organization/company then what is this person to the org?  Employee? owner? .. from your list as you set it up.

Reciprocal - What is constituent to this person?

If person you're adding is an employee, the constituent would/could be employer (again depending on your list)

    Good luck

If you are unsure about how a field should be used in RE, when you are in the screen hit F1 and a help screen will pop up explaining all the fields that you can see.  Really helpful with relationships/reciprocal as it can get very confusing!

    Re: Relationship/Reciprocal Confusion

The way that I've made this make sense to me is to read it in a sentence. Constituent is a ___(relationship)____ whose ___(reciprocal)___is _________. For example if your main constituent is John Doe and you want to add a relationship to his son James Doe, then it would read as follows: John Doe is a Father whose son is James Doe. So, your relationship would be Father and your reciprocal would be son. It works the same for org records: MyCompany is an Employer whose Employee is John Doe: Relationship = Employer, Reciprocal = Employee Hope that helps.
