    Log On Help, Please

I have installed Crystal Reports for Blackbaud on my computer and when I try to add the RE7_1 data source it asks for a logon and password. I have tried using the logon and password information I use to log onto RE but I get a connection failed error message. Any help?

    Thanks so much,

    Julie Kelley

It sounds like the RE7_1 data source is directly on the server, and your password for RE will not work.  I don't think you need to access your server.  Try this: When looking for your file, instead of selecting ODBC in the Data Explorer, select Database Files and then Find Database File.  Find the location of your Blackbaud Report Writer Database.  That is what I do since I don't have direct access to our surver.  Hope this helps!

    Re: Log On Help, Please

    Julie,

It sounds like you are attempting to write a report on the back end data.  That will work if you are familiar with the table structure of Raiser's Edge and have worked with SQL.  The table structure is documented in the schema.  The schema is installed on every Raiser's Edge workstation and can usually be found at:  C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\The Raisers Edge 7\Help\RE7Schema.chm.  If this is what you really want to do, you will need to get a logon and password from your SQL database administrator.  He/She should give that logon read only permissions.  Optionally, you can contact Blackbaud for RE:Open.  I don't know what it costs.

If what you are really trying to do is to write a custom report that will run inside the Raiser's Edge shell, then you should follow the procedures laid out by Blackbaud instead.  They've published a tutorial on how to create custom crystal reports.  It's on the web site at:  http://www.blackbaud.com/files/support/guides/crystal/crystal_tutorial.pdf.  If you are a novice to Crystal reports, this can be challenging the first few times, but custom reports can be a very powerful tool.

By the way, if you have the optional queue module, I would recommend using Crystal 8.5 rather than Crystal 11.  Queue and Crystal 11 don't play together well.

    Hope this helps.
