Custom Report for Consistency of Giving

I'm looking for a way to pull individuals who have given for X or more different calendar years. In my case, I want to find out how many in our database have given a gift 20 or more different years. They need not be consecutive. The canned "Consecutive Years Report" doesn't work, because a donor can't miss a year of giving, which in my case, that doesn't matter as long as they have given 20+ years since they first became a donor.

I've spoken with Blackbaud regarding this and they offered a work-around that needs to be manually adjusted once in Excel. I appreciated that, but I'm wondering if someone has done something similar, perhaps in Crystal Reports. I'm average-to-below-average in Crystal report formulas, but it seems that there could be something that would work if...someone could show me how.

If any of you have any input, it would be appreciated.

    • Create a group on the constituent (usually with the sortkey or ID).
    • Create a formula to calculate the (fiscal) year of the gift.  My standard one is Year(DateAdd("q", 2, {Gf.GiftDate})), but yours may be different if you have a fiscal year other than 7/1 - 6/30.
    • Place that formula in the details.
    • Create a Distinct Count summary field for the fiscal year in the constituent group.
    • Open the Select Expert.
    • Click on the Show Formula button.
    • Click "<New>" and select the distinct count summary from the listbox and set the criteria to "greater than or equal to" 20.

It's sounds more complicated than it really is.  Let me know if you have any questions.
