&lt;p&gt;I cannot say exactly how long you should keep your backups. It depends on how far back you think you may need to go to find missing data. &amp;nbsp;It also can depend on company policy and federal, state and industry regulations. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To minimize the number of tapes that you are storing you may want to consider a Grandfather-Father-Son storage plan (&lt;a rel="nofollow" target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather-father-son_backup"&gt;en.wikipedia.org/.../Grandfather-father-son_backup&lt;/a&gt;). &amp;nbsp;You can even modify this plan to have a Great Grandfather where every six months (or once a year) you save one of your monthly backups for and then recycle the montly, or grandfather backups.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For those who don't have an automated backup solution, don't spend any money. &amp;nbsp;You can pay $1100 for Symantec Backup Exec to move your backup onto a tape drive, or you can save that money, use the free function built into Windows, and then spend it on things that further your mission. &amp;nbsp;Just adjust this and set it as a scheduled task to move the BAK or ZIP file after the Management Console creates it:&lt;/p&gt;
