Gift Gab: Make Me A Match

Early in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a trio of girls memorably join together in song to voice their longing for a perfect match. Although an unseen orchestra is unlikely to spontaneously accompany your gift entry process, it is possible to make a perfect match of your own. If you have constituents whose employers match their donations, you can track this by adding matching gift companies and gifts.

If a Matching Gift company does not already have an organization record in your database, add a new record and then add the organization as a relationship on the individual's constituent record. If the organization matches all of its employees' gifts, add the matching gift information on the organization record's Org 1 tab. To do so, mark the Organization matches gifts checkbox and enter the matching gift information.

  • In the Factor field, enter the ratio by which the organization matches gifts. Factor represents the ratio of the matching gift amount to the amount of the matched gift (e.g., "2.00" indicates the company matches a $100 gift with a $200 matching gift pledge).
  • In the Fiscal Year Starts field, enter the month and day representing the beginning of the organization's fiscal year.
  • In the Match Gift Limits grid, enter the maximum and minimum amounts the organization matches per gift, annual per donor, and total per donor.

If the organization matches some, but not all, employees' gifts, add the matching gift information on the General 2 tab of the organization relationship record on the individual's constituent record. Once you have saved these changes, the company will be included in the search results when you search for matching gift companies.

If an individual and an organization are linked as relationships and the Organization matches gifts checkbox is marked on the General 2 tab of the organization relationship record, a matching gift pledge is generated automatically each time you add a gift to the individual's constituent record. If the records are not linked, you can add a matching gift manually.

To add a matching gift manually, go to the Matching Gifts tab on a gift record and click New Matching Gift. Click the binoculars and search for the matching gift company. This search is limited only to organizations for which the Org 1 tab's Organization matches gifts checkbox is marked. The gift details default based on the information on the organization's Org 1 tab and the individual's gift - adjust as necessary.

When you save the matching gift, it appears as an MG Pledge on the both the organization's Gifts tab and on the individual's Gifts tab. When you receive payment from the organization, add a gift on the organization's Gifts tab and apply it toward the outstanding matching pledge balance. These gifts will have the type of MG Pay-Cash.
