I LOVE the Blackbaud Fund and working with the all-employee Grants Committee! It's pretty rare that a large company allows its employees to get involved in real decision-making around charitable giving, and the Blackbaud employees that serve on the Grants Committee always do a great job. They are really the ones who do the hard work, and year after year, I am always amazed at the outcome. Trust me, this group works hard coming to consensus, weighing all options and discussing specifics, and their funding recommendations are solid investments. I always feel good walking out of the last meeting, and it's such an honor to work with people who are so focused and committed. Special thanks to Tina Fei (thank you, thank you, thank you!!) and to Committee Members LeAnn Logue, Lindsey Salamony, Robert Goodman & Tui Allen that rolled off after this most recent grant cycle (we'll miss you!!).

Elizabeth - That's wonderful. We have a Ronald McDonald effort at Blackbaud as well. Each month, a team of employees signs up to provide dinner to the residents of the house. I have taken my kids a few times to help set up. My youngest had surgery when he was born, and if we had been from out of town, that's where we would have stayed. So it hits home with him. Also, we collect pop tabs for the organization, which they turn into cash to support their programs. That's another really easy thing for people to do at home and at work.

Hi Rachel:

Great blog post! I recently started volunteering for my local Ronald McDonald House for parents and families of severely ill children. It's a great place that runs significantly on volunteer support. Then, I started a collection basket in my office and got my entire office involved in donating sample and travel-sized personal care products for use in the guest rooms at the House.

It's amazing how a seemingly small and incidental contribution can really go far toward helping out a great cause. Keep up the good work!

Sure is. There's nothing like having actual evidence that the example you're trying to set as a parent is working. Even better, there's nothing like enhancing your own understanding of those values by seeing things through their eyes - and the way they choose to give back. Volunteerism takes so many forms, and leave it to kids to challenge us to be creative about making a difference.
