Many of the best business minds, including many who serve on for-profit boards somehow think the non-profit is a different beast, and it really is not in terms of the role of a good director.

One issue that I did not see mentioned on these lists is the fact that many non-profit CEO's, ED's, etc. intentionally treat their directors as advisory board members rather than directors. They either don't understand the proper role of their board or prefer to treat them in the advisory board role, i.e. a weak board that does not ask tough questions and serve the organizaion as it should.

I do, because I work for a charity, but I would bet that if my odd donation to a charity is the extent of my relationship, I might not know about opportunities that exist. Even if I volunteer, often being on the Board is not an oft-communicated option.

I do understand the issues of security, but I would have thought that the President would have state of the art technology at his disposal. But, I too think it's fantastic of Obama wanting to stay in touch with world, with the use of the technology of today and the future.
Personally, what is most sad is exactly what Jay mentions - the ability to convene the core vendors, consulting firms, and thinkers in one place to find common direction. At one time, this was the core goal of ePF. NFG had lofty goals of bridging the consumer-nonprofit needs gap and has slowly become simply a non-profit vendor (Foundation backed), in my opinion.

I also miss the idealistic future both of these organizations dared to dream of. I am sure an organization will eventually fill the void, and I am sure Jay will be there!
