The Russell 2000, made up of smaller fish, is down 18% over the same period.

With that in mind, we identified the strongest small public outfits in a very tough time for our list of the 200 Best Small Companies in America. To qualify, companies must have sales between $5 million and $750 million and a stock price of $5 as of Sept. 29. The ranking is based on return on equity, sales growth and profit growth over the past 12 months and also over five years. We also compare a company's stock performance with that of its industry peers.

By Ian Stokell

Fundraising is the financial lifeline of live theatre. Especially when you consider that, for many theatres, ticket sales barely account for 50 percent of operating costs.

Fundraising sounds easy enough. Just go out and ask people for money, right? Not so. The key is often not only how you ask, but who. This is never truer than for a capital campaign.

The Difference between a Capital Campaign and an Annual Campaign
There is a big difference between a regular annual fundraising campaign and a capital campaign. A lot of annual fundraising is born out of necessity, simply a way to make up for operating losses. It is also a way to replace such depreciating assets as props, computers, or an archaic phone system, as well as to pay for program services.

Says Kit Matthew, Blackbaud’s Arts & Cultural Solution product manager, “We tend to think of capital as a building or new facilities, but capital campaigns could also be for new business ventures, new corporate infrastructure, even new ways of doing business such as moving to the virtual world of the Internet.”

Ehrenfried’s position overseeing community relations allows her to foster that love of public service through Blackbaud’s philanthropic efforts. Ehrenfried manages Blackbaud’s corporate giving portfolio, directs corporate giving and works with the company’s almost 2,000 employees to promote philanthropy and volunteerism.

Blackbaud has long been a strong supporter of community service and is taking that vision to its other offices, across the United States and in London; Glasgow, Scotland; and Sydney, Australia.

One of the company’s core beliefs is that service to others makes the world a better place, Ehrenfried said. She helps the company and its employees live out that value.
